Upcoming NJ 12 News Station Visit

nj12 logo.jpg

This fall, the chapter will host an in-person visit to the NJ 12 news station, giving members a unique opportunity to gain behind-the-scenes access to broadcast meteorology and engage with industry professionals. Further information about this event will be posted on the chapter’s social media and emailed to members once exact dates and times are confirmed.

One Year Anniversary of our Chapter Discord

Over the past year, our members have been consistently engaged in daily discussions on our chapter discord. Open to all verified members, the server is divided into different channels dedicated to specific weather topics, like general forecasting, severe weather, and hurricanes.

Every day, members use both voice and text channels to share their forecast model analyses, discuss their insights, and create custom forecasts. In the process, they learn from each other's areas of interest and perspectives. The fun doesn’t stop there; members also use the server for other meteorological tasks like tracking storm intensity, coordinating storm-chasing adventures, and reporting on live weather events as they happen!

What it means to be a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador in Our Chapter

weather ready ambassador.png

The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador™ program is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) effort to improve the nation’s readiness, responsiveness, and overall resilience against extreme weather, water, and climate events through partnerships with organizations, academia, and private industry.

As a registered WRN Ambassador, the AMS pre-college chapter participates in NOAA’s research and monitoring efforts through their volunteer citizen science opportunities. Members make daily precipitation and weather condition reports to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network, which is then fed into weather forecasting models and used to create more accurate predictions. Several members are also Skywarn spotters who help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service, helping the NWS create more accurate severe weather warnings.

Outside formal roles, members also work to increase weather awareness in their school and local communities by sharing real-time weather updates through their social media accounts and school announcements.
